Paul Wackerly - Head Coach, Perry
Boys Basketball |
|
Coach Wackerly
begins his 30th season as a basketball coach with two
significant changes. First and foremost, he was hired as the Perry
Boys Basketball Coach this past Spring. Secondly, he has spent his
entire high school career as a girls coach. His journey began at
St. Thomas Aquinas, his alma mater, as the JV coach before becoming
the Lady Knights' head coach. He guided St Thomas to a 67-67
record in his six seasons, winning back-to-back District
Championships.
For the last 14
seasons he was the head Girls Basketball Coach at North Canton
Hoover amassing a record of 252-74 (77%), departing as the
winningest coach since the inception of the program.
In his career he
has been fortunate to have had many wonderful experiences. The
most significant, the 2002 State Championship. With a special group
of athletes, they were able to achieve what others can only dream
of.
In addition to a
State Championship, the Lady Vikings, with coach Wackerly at the
helm, attained...
8 - Federal League Titles (league record 131-24 (85%) over 14
seasons)
5 -
District Titles
5 - Sweet 16 Appearances
4 - Elite 8 Appearances
6 - 20+ win seasons
16 - All-Ohio players (1st Team to Honorable Mention)
46-18 Career tournament record (72%)
During that same
timeframe, one of his proudest accomplishments is that 27 of his
players received scholarships and continued their academic and
athletic careers at the next level.
With all that
being said, he couldn't be happier having made the choice he has to
develop the young men who have committed themselves to his program.
Coach Wackerly has been very impressed with the number of athletes
who have dedicated themselves this past Spring, Summer and Fall to a
very difficult weightlifting regimen monitored by John Foster. From
previous experience he knows that strength and conditioning are very
important intangibles down the home stretch.
There is no
substitute for hard work and in keeping with that mindset he can
only hope to develop and instill this attitude from the youth who
will be participating in the newly developed youth league, through
Middle School to the High School program.
Coach Wackerly
has been married to his wife Jean for 30 years. They have one
child, Bret ? 23, who is on staff as an assistant coach. In
addition to the countless hours spent on basketball, he is a
business entrepreneur.

2001, a season that culminated in a State Championship. As a senior
at Manchester High, he led all Summit County players in scoring and
rebounding, while pacing Manchester to its first league title in 21
seasons. He became only the second player in school history to
accept a D-1 basketball scholarship. As a four year starter at the
University of Akron, Ryan helped the Zips win their first league
title in over a decade. He graduated as one of only 13 players in
university history to be a member of both the 1,000 point and 500
